Chalazion describes a granulomatous reaction within the (upper or lower) eyelid, specifically affecting the meibomian gland and resulting from glandular inflammation, infection and/or obstruction. Topical anti-inflammatory and/or antimicrobial treatment alone is unlikely to be effective. Systemic antimicrobial therapy will address bacterial blepharitis if present, however the granulomatous reaction which comprises a chalazion, requires physical incision, drainage & curettage in order to be effectively reduced.
